There's still no shortcut for Good Taste.

There's still no shortcut for Good Taste.

There’s still no shortcut for good taste.

AI can build the moodboard. It can generate a hundred options before I’ve finished my coffee. But it has never smelled the difference between “moody hotel lobby” and “rental-car air freshener.” And yes, there is absolutely a difference.

At Forte, a candle doesn’t begin with a list of popular fragrance notes. It begins with a feeling. What atmosphere are we creating? Where does it take you? Is it dark and cinematic? Warm and familiar? Polished, but still a little unexpected?

Finding that feeling takes more than entering the right words into a prompt.

It takes smelling a fragrance over and over. Testing it in wax. Lighting it. Living with it. Realizing the smoke has swallowed the citrus or that the sweetness needs something darker to give it an edge.

Sometimes a fragrance is perfectly pleasant—but pleasant isn’t always memorable.

Maybe it’s the designer in me, but I know when something is almost right. And almost right is not it. The design needs that same attention. The fragrance is only one part of a Forte candle.

I can spend hours comparing swatches, adjusting colors and watching how a label changes when it’s wrapped around iridescent glass. A color that looks rich and dramatic on a screen can suddenly look muddy once the candle is lit.

The typography, glass, label and fragrance all need to feel as though they belong to the same story.

That doesn’t happen by choosing the first attractive option. It happens by looking again, removing what doesn’t belong and knowing when to stop.

Technology is a tool—not the taste-maker

I’m not anti-AI. I’m anti letting it do all the thinking.

Technology can help us explore ideas and see possibilities more quickly. But endless possibilities aren’t the same thing as a point of view.

Taste is knowing what belongs, what doesn’t and when something finally feels right.
It comes from experience, instinct, memory and all the tiny decisions that may never be obvious in the finished product—but change the way it makes you feel.

Some things still need to be smelled, tested, adjusted and felt.
Some things still require life experience and a human touch.
